consumed by anxiety and guilt," Scar very much "delight in his monstrosity " both characters are motivated by jealousy. According to Slate, while Claudius is mostly "a second-rate schemer . Although first citing these similarities as initially unintentional, director Rob Minkoff always felt it was essential "to anchor with something familiar." As directors, Minkoff and Roger Allers aspired to create "an animal picture based in a more natural setting," describing the film as "More true-life adventure than mythical epic." Although not the first Disney film to have been inspired by Shakespeare's work, The Lion King remains the studio's most prominent example due to close parallels between its characters and Hamlet, while both stories revolve around main characters who struggle to come to terms with the reality that they must confront their treacherous uncles and avenge their fathers' deaths. Disch's treatment and William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. The film was eventually pitched to Disney executives, one of whom was among the first to observe similarities between author Thomas M. The Lion King was first conceived in 1988. He has also been ranked among the greatest villains in film history by Digital Spyand Entertainment Weekly. Nevertheless, Scar continues to be revered as one of Disney's greatest villains by various media publications, topping The Huffington Post 's list and ranking within the top ten of similar lists published by Yahoo! Movies, the Orlando Sentinel, E! and CNN. However, Scar's violence, dark color palette and allegedly effeminate mannerisms were initially met with mild controversy. voicing him in a follow-up film.Īs a character, Scar has garnered widespread acclaim from film critics, who greeted Irons's vocal performance with equal enthusiasm. Chiwetel Ejiofor voices the photorealistic version of the character in the CGI remake of the 1994 film with Kelvin Harrison Jr. As the character's supervising animator, Deja based Scar's appearance on that of original voice actor Jeremy Irons, as well as the actor's performance as Claus von Bülow in Reversal of Fortune. Loosely based on King Claudius, the main antagonist of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Scar's villainy was additionally inspired by Adolf Hitler. Originally first in line to Mufasa's throne until he is suddenly replaced by Mufasa's son Simba, Scar decides to lead an army of hyenas in his plot to take the throne by killing Mufasa and exiling Simba, ultimately blaming his brother's death on his nephew. Scar is introduced in the first film as the ruthless, power-hungry younger brother of Mufasa, ruler of the Pride Lands. He was created by screenwriters Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton, and animated by Andreas Deja. Scar is a fictional character and the main antagonist in Disney's The Lion King franchise. Mohatu (grandfather in The Brightest Star) Heir to the Throne of Pride Rock (formerly) īMR may be measured by gas analysis through either direct or indirect calorimetry, though a rough estimation can be acquired through an equation using age, sex, height, and weight. A more common measurement, which uses less strict criteria, is resting metabolic rate (RMR). An accurate BMR measurement requires that the person's sympathetic nervous system not be stimulated, a condition which requires complete rest. Indirect calorimetry laboratory with canopy hood (dilution technique)īMR is measured under very restrictive circumstances when a person is awake. Illness, previously consumed food and beverages, environmental temperature, and stress levels can affect one's overall energy expenditure as well as one's BMR. But anaerobic exercise does increase resting energy consumption (see " aerobic vs. Aerobic (resistance) fitness level, a product of cardiovascular exercise, while previously thought to have effect on BMR, has been shown in the 1990s not to correlate with BMR when adjusted for fat-free body mass. Increasing muscle mass has the effect of increasing BMR. BMR generally decreases with age, and with the decrease in lean body mass (as may happen with aging). The body's generation of heat is known as thermogenesis and it can be measured to determine the amount of energy expended. In humans, BMR typically declines by 1–2% per decade after age 20, mostly due to loss of fat-free mass, although the variability between individuals is high. The basal metabolic rate accounts for about 60 to 75% of the daily calorie expenditure by individuals. Basal metabolic rate affects the rate that a person burns calories and ultimately whether that individual maintains, gains, or loses weight. Some of those processes are breathing, blood circulation, controlling body temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles. Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy per unit of time that a person needs to keep the body functioning at rest. Metabolism comprises the processes that the body needs to function. This makes BMR a variant of standard metabolic rate measurement that excludes the temperature data, a practice that has led to problems in defining "standard" rates of metabolism for many mammals. It follows the same criteria as BMR, but requires the documentation of the temperature at which the metabolic rate was measured. In bradymetabolic animals, such as fish and reptiles, the equivalent term standard metabolic rate ( SMR) applies. These criteria include being in a physically and psychologically undisturbed state and being in a thermally neutral environment while in the post- absorptive state (i.e., not actively digesting food). Proper measurement requires a strict set of criteria to be met. It is reported in energy units per unit time ranging from watt (joule/second) to ml O 2/min or joule per hour per kg body mass J/(h Rate of energy expenditure by an endotherm at restīasal metabolic rate ( BMR) is the rate of energy expenditure per unit time by endothermic animals at rest. However, a sole proprietor is personally responsible for debts incurred by the business and may find it hard to raise funds and hire employees. This type of business is easy to set up, and accounting is simple since it is attached to the owner’s personal tax returns. Most businesses start out as sole proprietorships, where the owner has full control as well as full responsibility. Once this is all mapped out, it will be easier to define the business. Think about how exposed you’re likely to be to lawsuits and the tax implications of what you intend to profit vs. Consider how large your business is likely to be, how much control you want to retain and how structured it will be. Considering your long-term and short-term business goals can help you to determine what makes the most sense – a proprietorship, partnership, corporation or one of the nuanced varieties of these main choices. One of the first decisions business owners have to make is to define their official business entity status. Sure, the idea of getting all this infrastructure going can be daunting to say the least, so we’ve decided to break it all down for you and explain the basic principles at play. You might have seen content around the web telling you that you need a merchant underwriter, LLC status in Delaware, LTD status in Cyprus, a payment processor gateway, a bookkeeping solution, an account with Square, three PayPal accounts, and a team of geeks to make sure it’s all running smoothly.īut it really doesn’t have to be all that complicated, and almost everything relating to your business’s payments only needs to be set up once – after the systems are activated and playing together nicely, you should be able to finally focus on actually getting work done. Along with self-employment advantages like schedule flexibility, pursuing a dream and having full control come the responsibilities of setting yourself up financially to bill clients, pay taxes and pay others. Setting up your own business is an exciting if sometimes stressful endeavor. At the first post-operative appointment, the dressing is changed and the patient is allowed to shower. Patients can maintain the bent position by using pillows under their knees and behind their back or sleeping in a recliner chair. Patients must remain bent at the waist for seven days postoperatively, even while they sleep. Patients return to our office for a follow-up visit within two to three days after surgery. They are highly-respected by patients and peers alike. They are board-certified plastic surgeons and members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Our experienced cosmetic surgeons have been serving tummy tuck patients in Charlotte for many years. This is when we can make a difference by performing tummy tuck surgery. Diet and exercise are always the first steps to improve our overall health and body shape, but no amount of diet and exercise will remove extra skin or tighten loose muscles. The surgery is not as easy on patients as liposuction, but for patients with extra skin and loose muscles, the results are far more impressive. Patients’ lives are changed when they can return to wearing the kinds of clothes that they want to wear and participate in activities with their friends and families that they were embarrassed to do before the surgery. Tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures, such as breast lift and liposuction into a procedure known as a mommy makeover.Ībdominoplasty produces one of the most dramatic changes we see in cosmetic surgery. Still, we would rather prevent this fluid by wearing the compression garment than treat it with aspiration. This is a painless procedure for the patient because the abdominal skin is numb for approximately 6–12 months after surgery and makes aspiration very easy. Aspiration is a sterile process where the fluid is removed by passing a needle through the skin and tapping the excess fluid. Unresponsive scars can be surgically revised, but this is unusual.įluid collections under the skin can occur if the abdominal tissue is not compressed to the underlying repaired muscle. Hypertrophic thick scars occur occasionally and are treated with massage, vitamin E, and compression if needed. This is an inconvenience we would rather avoid than treat. If the skin doesn’t heal well we keep it clean and moist and eventually it heals itself. That is why we are very cautious about keeping the waist bent for seven days after surgery. Incisions that don’t heal well because of decreased blood supply have occurred when the skin closure is too tight. Like any surgery, bleeding and infection are possible risks, but occur very rarely. Most patients are back to work at approximately three weeks. We don’t allow any isolated abdominal muscle exercise for three months, but all other exercises can be gradually increased beginning at three weeks. We advise that it be worn with exercise for additional support from then on until three months. At three weeks, the compression garment can come off. The abdomen may seem tight at first, but will loosen with time. In order to allow the muscle and skin to adhere to each other, we recommend the abdominal area be kept quiet by limiting the bending and twisting motion of the waist for three weeks. In seven days, the patient is allowed to stand up straight and lie flat on a bed. At that time the dressing is changed and the patient is allowed to shower. We see our tummy tuck patients five to seven days after surgery in our Charlotte office. This is very important to produce healthy skin that is as tight as possible post-operatively. We also require our patients to walk with their waist bent for the first seven days to lessen the tension on the skin closure. But these tight muscles are like having a pulled muscle in the abdomen and everyone knows that can be tender. The surgery can be painful, as muscles are made very tight to achieve the best possible look. The surgery is performed at our fully accredited plastic surgery facility under general anesthesia, in which the patient is totally asleep. The incision is closed with dissolvable stitches and the patient is put in a compression garment to decrease swelling and bruising. Then the muscles are tightened to recreate the waistline and flatten the tummy. Extra fat is thinned from the underside to trim the abdominal contour. When that skin is removed, so are all the stretch marks on that skin. Frequently there is enough loose skin that all of the skin between the belly button and the pubic bone can be removed. The surgery is done through an incision that is from hip to hip, but even the skimpiest bathing suit would hide it. A full abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a procedure where extra skin and fat are removed and the loose muscles are repaired.
